As breast cancer has spread rapidly for the last few decades around the globe so various inventions are being made in this field to combat this dreadful disease, but no way to defeat the disease is found yet however some useful techniques are introduced to catch breast cancer symptoms at initial stage when they are not too large to notice with the help of common observation.

Breast Cancer Screening

Breast cancer screening is the most useful technique to catch cancer at initial stage when symptoms are too small to observe through self or clinical examination. Some of the symptoms appear as

  • Lump of any size or structure as the lump can be round or with edges, static or can move.
  • Swelling in any part of breast or armpit can be due to any breast abnormality or breast cancer.
  • Dimpling, puckering or any other skin change.
  • Size and shape of breast changes.
  • Change in the texture.
  • Inversion or ulceration of nipple and other such changes.
  • Fluid discharge from nipple. The fluid can be yellowish, greenish or bloody.
  • Rashes on skin.
  • Consistent pain in breast that does not go away.

It is essential to catch these changes at initial stage because at this stage these changes can be treated easily at this stage by using a number of treatment options. Mammogram is the most useful screening technique to screen breast for detection of unusual changes. Mammogram includes two X-rays of each breast from different angles so that the whole breast can be examined thoroughly and no part remains unchecked.

X-rays are taken carefully after compressing the breast with a flat surface so that the clear image can be taken. Expert oncologists and doctors examine the x-rays for catching anomalies. In some cases due to various factors false results are given and women who don’t have this cancer are declared to have it due to the false positives, but overall the technique is worthy to appreciate.

In the developed countries women are offered to attend free screening sessions such as in the UK women are offered to attend free screening sessions so that more and more cancer cases can be diagnosed at initial stage and the survival rate can be increased. This technique is advised to women of a specific age group most of the times it is started at the age of 50, but in some cases it can starts earlier at the age of 40 as well when women have higher risk factors like family history or personal history of breast cancer.
